What kind of research is necessary to write the history of poetry? What collections of poems should be dealt with? Should the history of poetry be written by poets or by scholars of contemporary literature? What distinctive characters will result from poets writing the history of poetry? And what will happen if the scholars write it? In addition, in what style is the history to be written? There is little information about the most recent works. How can the collections of such new poems be appreciated properly? With regard to these various questions, five classics on the history of poetry, which were very instructive to the writer, are closely discussed in this article.
