This was deeply upsetting to the poet Nagai Kafu（1879－1959）. Kafu, who was enamored with the mood of Edo, lamented that the city of Tokyo had lost its aesthetic worth through modernization. One of the characteristics of his poetry is a sharp critique of Japan’s modernization as seen from the point of view of city planning. This is fundamentally connected with another recurring theme in his poetry: a profound sense of longing for a prostitute with whom he had fallen in love, but left in the USA. On the surface, these two notions are quite different, but in Kafu’s poetry, they are bridged by the Sumida River. Edo’s mood is preserved in the area of the Sumida River which is inhabited by numerous prostitutes.
