Studying a case of an American charter school which works with lesson plans based on Dewey’s idea of inquiry learning seems to be useful for designing social studies lesson plans in Japanese elementary schools.\nAt this school, children were engaged in various experiential learning. The 6th grade’s “Exploration Time” is designed based on the idea of Dewey’s history learning about the establishment of ancient civilization. Focusing on their “lives” in the past, students are encouraged to discuss where they would live if they were humans in the past. In the post-activity discussions, the teacher tries to relate their conversations to what they learned in social studies.
